top IT - Information Technology rankings IDC: Nordic countries are the world's leading IT societies A new report from U.S. market intelligence firm IDC has confirmed the Nordic countries as the worlds leading information societies. The research company said that Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Norway dominated its 2004 index of top IT nations. IDCs Information Society Index (ISI) quantifies the abilities of 53 nations to participate in the information revolution based on four key areas: computers, internet, telecom services and receptivity to technology. Factors considered include PC and internet usage, e-commerce, telecommunications infrastructure, broadband and wireless subscribers, education levels, civil liberties, press freedom and government corruption. Sweden, which had held first place in the survey in the preceding four years, was narrowly beaten to the top spot by Denmark. However, according to IDC, Sweden is still the top-ranking country when it comes to access, usage and utilization of the Internet. IDC reported that a quarter of all users accessing the web do so via mobile devices. Mobile services are now subscribed to by 80% of the Swedish population. World Economic Forum: Nordic Countries on the IT top The Nordic countries are at the top of the world's strongest development within the information technology and competitiveness, confirmed the Global Information Technology Report, which is published annually by the organization World Economic Forum (WEF). Of the 104 countries that WEF has ranged, all the Nordic countries are in a very strong position. The high placements are among other things an expression of great innovation abilities. Development and research in the Nordic nations has led to an impressive number of IT patents compared with the number of inhabitants in each of those countries, writes WEF. Sweden's strong ICT background and instrumental role in developing many of the world's most advanced communications technologies is named as a major factor in the country's success. The country is home to some five hundred wireless companies and represents a major investment opportunity for foreign companies. The presence of international wireless systems leaders, particularly Ericsson, is a catalyst for growth, with both Ericsson and TeliaSonera being largely responsible for developing WCDMA third-generation mobile technology.
