We are 5,3 million Danes living in the Kingdom of Denmark. Our capital is Copenhagen (1.4 million), about one quarter of the population of Denmark lives in here. Other towns: Odense, Århus, Ålborg, Esbjerg, Randers. Islands: About 500, out of which only 100 are inhabited. We speak Danish. Danish is close to the other Scandinavian languages. About Danish history - The Danish monarchy claims to be the world's oldest and dates back to the 10th century. - During the Middle Ages the Danish Vikings terrified all Europe and got to conquer England and many other territories. Know more about the Vikings here. - On the 14th century Denmark absorbed the kingdoms of Norway and Sweden in the Union of Kalmar. - The 19th century meant a cultural awakening for Denmark in the arts and literature. - After the WW II the Social Democrats established the famous Scandinavian Welfare State, which provides the Danes with extensive social security protection. - Denmark is nowadays one of the most prosperous nations in the world and a member of the European Union since 1973. The Danes are known for... - Vikings : King Knud, ruled northwest Europe from Norway to England. - Writers and Philosophers : another king, the king of fairy tale, Hans Christian Andersen, his tales have know all around the world. Other famous writers are Karen Blixen and Peter Høeg. N.F.S. Grundtvig and Søren Kirkegaard, philosopher, the father of existencialism. - Film Directors : Lars Von Trier and Carl Dreyer, film directors. Some of Dreyers films are internationally acclaimed as masterpieces. - Sciences : Niels Bohr, physicist, formulated the principle of atomic fission. Bjarne Stroustrup, designed the C++ programming language. Arne Jacobsen, architect. - Soccer : the Danes love soccer and the world loves Brian and Michael Laudrup, Morten Olsen, Martin Laursen, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Thomas Helveg and Peter Schmeichel to name just a few. - You also know Denmark because Shakespeares Hamlet, Carlsberg beer, the Vikings, the Danish wind farms and Lego.
