We are 4,4 million Norwegians living in the Kingdom of Norway. Our capital is Oslo (475,000 inhabitants). Other towns: Bergen, Stavanger, Kristiansand, Trondheim. Islands: About 50,000. We speak Norwegian. Norwegian is close to the other Scandinavian language. There are Finnish-speaking minorities and 20,000 Sami living in Norwegian Lapland. Learn Norwegian here. Know more about the Vikings here. - Norway became a unified kingdom in the 10th century. - In the 14th century Denmark absorved the kingdoms of Norway and Sweden into the Union of Kalmar. - Sweden ruled over Norway from 1814 until the union between the two countries was disolved in 1905, when Norway became an independent nation. - Norway is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) but remains as the only country in the Scandinavian peninsula that hasn't joined the European Union. - Learn more about Viking and modern Norwegian history here. The Norwegians are known for... - Painting and Music : Possibly the two most famous Norwegians ever, Edvard Munch, painter and Edvard Grieg, classical composer. Other famous musical Norwegians are A-Ha, the most famous Norwegian band, and Røyksopp. - Literature : Henrik Ibsen is author of the world's most played stageplay - A Dollshouse. Sigrid Undset, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Knud Hamsun won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Roald Dahl, children's author. - Sciences : Niels Henrik Abel, mathematician, and Kristian Birkeland, physicist, greatly contributed to science's progress. - Explorers : The last boundaries of the planet were explored by Roald Amundsen, Fritjof Nansen, and Thor Heyerdahl, famous Norwegian explorers. Norwegian born Eric The Red sailed to and colonised Greenland in the year 985 and his Icelander son Leif Ericson went on to the shores of North America. - Skiers : The Norwegians are the Scandinavian skiing masters with athletes like Ole Christian Furuseth, Lasse Kjus, Atle Skaardal or Kjetil Andrè Aamodt. - You also know Norway because our fjords, our trolls and the Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games in 1994.
